Felt DIY crafting

3.10.2019 | | Seen: 7398x
Take a look at the world of felting. It's a totally awesome technique you'll love. Introducing the types of felt and offering a lots of inspiration.

The basis for felting is the wool fleece. It't used to make felt figurines. Another material is fabric decorative felt, which you can use for scrapbooking, but also for making brooches and wish cards. Thanks to its ability to accept color, the fleece is also very popular in the production of paintings and tapestries.

The principle of felting is to "twist" the wool fibers into one another either mechanically (by pressure, friction, felting needle) or with warm water and soap.

TYPES OF FELTING

1) WET FELTING

Wet felting is one of several methods which can produce felt from wool and other animal fibres. Warm soapy water is applied to layers of animal hairs. Repeated agitation and compression causes the fibres to hook together into a single piece of fabric.

ADVICE!
If there is a "crack" and the ball breaks, put a soap on hands and smooth the crack. If that does not help, wrap the ball with a thin layer of wool and soap it.

ATTENTION!
We pull the wool out or tear it off, never cut it with scissors!

2) NEEDLE (DRY) FELTING

Special felting needles are used as a sculpting tool, the needles have notches along the shaft of the needle that grab the top layer of fibres and tangle them with the inner layers of fibres as the needle enters the wool.

ADVICE!
Hold the needle like pencil, the forefinger resting on the upper bent end. Use it against a felting foam, it is important to pull the needle out at the same angle as it was inserted, otherwise it will bend and break.
